Buzz on Twitter and a surge of sudden articles has been revolving around an announcement by Microsoft today to introduce new services that position Azure Stack as a cloud platform for VMware. However, the result of this was more controversy than fanfare. With this announcement, Microsoft is marketing itself as a direct competitor to "VMware on AWS [Amazon Web Services]". This became controversial when VMware promptly refused to endorse, support, or endorse Azure as a platform. This refusal to endorse was published today with the primary justification being that there must be explicit cooperation, testing, and planning between vendors in order for one to act as a battle-tested platform for the other. Hence, we cannot endorse an unsupported and non-engineered solution that isn’t optimized for the VMware stack... VMware does not recommend and will not support customers running on the Azure announced partner offering. (Ajay, November 22, 2017). It is curious that VMware lashed out like this at Microsoft, but we only see what is on public display. Giving VMware the benefit of the doubt, perhaps we can assume that VMware already tried reaching out to Microsoft to help with engineering these new Azure services to be optimized for vSphere but that, for now, Microsoft insisted to act on its own. However, as a customer and consumer of VMware, I would love to see this change. If Microsoft becomes motivated to work with VMware in order to introduce services that are jointly engineered between the two companies, then Azure and AWS could compete against each other in both quality of features and price of service. Customers can only hope that behind the scenes or under the surface that VMware and Microsoft are negotiating a plan for their engineers to work together and introduce a supported vSphere platform. AWS, while often able to cut physical infrastructure costs, is still a very expensive platform. It would follow that AWS and Azure entering a price war to support vSphere would only benefit consumers. Either way, VMware was not shy about going on the record with a decisive dismissal of Microsoft's new strategy. Of everything mentioned, what will no doubt sting Microsoft the most is VMware's interpretation of this announcement as an acknowledgement on Microsoft's part that its own virtualization technology (Hyper-V and Azure Stack) is inferior to VMware's comparable offerings: "Microsoft recognizing the leadership position of VMware’s offering and exploring support for VMware on Azure as a superior and necessary solution for customers over Hyper-V or native Azure Stack environments is understandable but, we do not believe this approach will offer customers a good solution to their hybrid or multi-cloud future...." (Ajay, November 22, 2017) Keeping an open mind for the future, VMware's wording that it will not support customers running on Azure is speaking to the present tense: VMware will not offer support to customers currently attempting to use Azure Stack as a platform. This does not exclude the possibility that VMware will offer support for Azure Stack in the future or that it will never recommend it in the future. For now, however, VMware is playing media relations hardball. Two days later, VMware double downs on its position. VMware's Chief Operating Officer, Sanjay Poonen, speaks out validating its opposition to Microsoft's new announcement. While Microsoft will likely attempt to proceed to position itself as the premiere platform for vSphere, so far VMware is not going to make it easy for them.

VMware Tech Pubs: Official tutorials on key concepts. Often has the only detailed video on a specialized topic such as vSphere RBAC. VMwareKB: "Providing how-to, best practices, troubleshooting, and conceptual videos for VMware products and platforms—straight from the VMware Knowledge Base." VMware vSphere: Introduces new vSphere features and provides technical walkthroughs on how to use the core platform. VMware Education & Certification: Instructional videos and information on certification paths such as VCDX preparation. Main VMware Official Channel: Mostly non-technical marketing videos, news, and corporate strategy. Good for keeping up with trends. Official VMware Channels with Specialized Topics Airwatch: "Mobility is Complicated. AirWatch makes enterprise mobility management simple." VMware Cloud Management: "Simplify cloud management, enable automation, maximize operational efficiency and increase IT and business agility." VMware Cloud-Native Apps: This channel features concepts surrounding running applications straight out of containers, which is currently only a very narrow part of the overall VMware conversation. VMware End-User Computing: "Businesses of all sizes are creating a digital workspace, delivering anytime, anywhere access to all applications, services and resources across all devices – desktops, tablets and smartphones." VMware HOL: Tips on how to use the VMware Hands-on-Labs and new developments and offerings from HoL. VMware LogInsight: "VMware vRealize Log Insight delivers real-time log management for VMware environments, with machine learning-based Intelligent Grouping, and high performance search, enabling faster troubleshooting and better operational analytics in across physical, virtual, and cloud environments. It can analyze terabytes of logs [and] discover structure in unstructured data." VMware NSX: "VMware NSX is the network virtualization platform that delivers the operational model of a VM for the network to transform data center operations and economics." VMware Storage: "VMware software-defined storage (SDS) is a simple, yet intelligent, storage data center architecture that leverages policy-based provisioning and management to eliminate static, purpose-built and inefficient hardware. VMware SDS Technologies include: VMware vSAN, Site Recovery Manager and Virtual Volumes." VMware vCloud: "VMware vCloud Suite is an integrated offering that brings together VMware’s industry-leading vSphere hypervisor and VMware vRealize Suite multi-vendor hybrid cloud management platform."

The VMware Update Manager (VUM) can be set up to pull patches from the web and a shared repository of UMDS data, but only one type of these download sources can be used concurrently. In this case, UMDS stands for Update Manager Download Service and does not stand for Universal Media Disk. Pulling patches from the web or a repository are the most scalable options as this automates the collection of patches, but for small scale testing and deployments the patches can be imported as a ZIP file. In a secure environment which locks down internet access, this is going to be the necessary route if there is not an internal repository available. Using a zip file in this way is also known as an offline bundle. When doing this, there is not a risk of submitting the same file twice because "Update Manager extracts it and checks whether the metadata.zip file has already been imported" (Configuring the Update Manager Download Sources). This section of the documentation continues to explain that the composition of an offline bundle is "one metadata.zip file, one or more VIB files, and optionally two .xml files, index.xml and vendor-index.xml". However, at seemingly no point does it stop to explain what a VIB is or what it even stands for, which is VMware Installation Bundle. This is not the same as the zip file which gets imported but instead is in that zip file. A great blog breaking down exactly what a VIB is about is "What's in a VIB?" by Kyle Gleed (September 13, 2011). As claimed in the 6.5 Documentation, “Downloading host patches from the VMware Web site is a secure process” (Configuring the Update Manager Download Sources). The process of downloading them from the VMware Patch Portal or major updates from the ESXi 6.5 product page is protected by SSL and verified by the VMware account used for the login. Also, patches are digitally signed with VMware private keys. “Before you try to install a patch on a host, the host verifies the signature" (Configuring the Update Manager Download Sources). KB 20142141 (September 11, 2017) runs over how to do this using various techniques. This is the command structure for how to do this on PowerCLI: Get-VMHostFirmware -VMHost ESXi_host_IP_address -BackupConfiguration -DestinationPath output_directory In the above command, 'output_directory' is the path to the folder where the configuration will be stored, such as C:/backups/esxi-configs. After storing the recovery file, the host can then be restored to this saved configuration with the following powerCLI command: Set-VMHostFirmware -VMHost ESXi_host_IP_address -Restore -SourcePath backup_file -HostUser username -HostPassword password Before attempting the restore operation, however, the host should be in maintenance mode, which assures that no online VMs are running on it and none will be migrated back to it with vMotion until it is ready and taken out of maintenance mode. This can be done with a simple right click on the host, but since it is more fun to do everything in PowerCLI, the following command can also be used to put the host in maintenance: Set-VMHost -VMHost ESXi_host_IP_address -State 'Maintenance' The above operations can also be done on the vSphere CLI or the ESXi CLI.
